Obesity expert says Wii Fit is innapropriate for children
    Posted 5/16/2008 at 1:34:13 PM

Last week there was much adieu over Wii Fit's labling of a little porker as "overweight". After much media attention centered on the child's overly protective parents, an obesity expert has stepped forth to offer some insight about Wii Fit.

"I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat. BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used.

A child's BMI can change every month and it is perfectly possible for a child to be stocky, yet still very fit. I would be very concerned if children were using this game and I believe it should carry a warning for parents." -Tam Fry of the National Obesity Forum
We're right with the experts on this one. Why in the world would we want our delicate snowflakes playing a horrendous game like WiiFit when they could be sitting on their chunky rumps playing something inactive? I mean sure, it's great to get kids to exercise a little bit,.. but never at the expense of hurt feelings.

Metallic Rose DS now a standard color choice
    Posted 5/16/2008 at 12:01:48 PM

The metallic rose DS, previously available for precisely one day last year as part of a holiday Nintendogs bundle, is now an official color choice in the Nintendo DS lineup.

Nintendo will launch an advertising campaign beginning Monday May 19th featuring America Ferrera(who?) and Carrie Underwood. Honestly this doesn't exactly get us very excited, but the thought that the similarly packaged gold ds could be coming to retail certainly does.

April NPD's show another big month for Nintendo
    Posted 5/16/2008 at 11:01:08 AM

You're not surprised are you? Nintendo did well in April. VERY well, in fact. In addition to Mario Kart Wii being the #2 game of the month(we're assuming #1 goes to Grand Theft Auto 4), they managed to move over 714,000 Wii consoles.. bringing their total to 9.5 million in the US. This is impressive considering Microsoft's recent announcement that they've moved 10m Xbox360's. With a year head start, and many people buying extra 360's due to impatience when their original console breaks,.. we can't help but feel that Nintendo's feat is even more impressive.

In addition, 6 of the top 10 selling games of April were for Nintendo consoles..

  • Mario Kart Wii(No. 2) (1.1 million units)
  • Wii Play (No. 4)
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl (No. 5) (3 million units lifetime)
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness (No. 7)
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (No. 8)
  • Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (No. 9)

    Going further with Wii homebrew
    Posted 5/16/2008 at 9:09:58 AM

It's been a little while since we posted the Idiot's Guide to Wii homebrew, and lots of advancements have been made, so we decided to post a bit of an update. This guide will build on the original and by the end of it you will have your own custom channels installed on the Wii. In addition, you will no longer need the Twilight Hack in order to load homebrew applications.

We're going to start out assuming that you've already followed through the first guide, you have the Twilight Hack set up, and the homebrew launcher operational. If not, please refer back to that and return when you've completed the process.

DISCLAIMER: When you start installing channels, you will be tinkering with the Wii's filesystem, and this could cause irreversible damage if something goes wrong. We take no responsibility whatsoever for any damage to your Wii hardware so proceed at your own risk.
    Let's Begin!

To start this process, you're going to need two files. The first is the WAD Installer. This is a typical ELF file that you will launch with the Twilight Hack.

The second file you should get is the WAD Installer Channel. This is the same application you just downloaded, but it's an actual channel that will install on your Wii menu. Once this is installed, you no longer need to use the Twilight Hack.

Now that you have the files, go ahead and throw the WAD Installer ELF on your SD card like you would do with any other application.(ex. X:/homebrew/wadinst/boot.elf). Create another directory on the root of the SD card called "wad" and place the Installer Channel WAD inside of it.(ex. X:/wad/installer.wad).

Place the SD card inside the Wii and perform the Twilight Hack. When the Homebrew Launcher is loaded, execute the WAD Installer and it will go to a black screen that asks you to press the Reset button on the Wii. Press the button, and the WAD will quickly install. Press reset to return to the Wii menu.

When the Wii restarts, you will notice a new channel with no icon sitting in the first previously empty spot on the menu. This is the WAD installer channel. Congratulations! You are now Twilight Hack free.

    More Essentials

Download and install the following applications:

  • Wii Homebrew Loader Channel - This channel will launch the majority of your Wii homebrew, since most applications are still ELF's as of now. More notes on this below. Install using the WAD Installer Channel

  • WAD Uninstaller - This is an ELF that will uninstall custom channels from your Wii. Simply copy the WAD's that you would like to remove to the "wad" folder you created earlier on the SD card. Launch the application from the Homebrew Loader Channel, hit Reset on the Wii, and they will be removed from the Wii menu.

  • About the Homebrew Loader Channel

This channel is built on the same Homebrew Loader we had you set up in the first guide, and as such, uses the same directory structure and settings as the original. That means that any ELF's you set up to load with it are still there for you right from the get go!

In addition, you can customize it's appearance by creating your own themes. We recommend you save yourself the trouble and download the excellent Classic Theme and icon pack, both by Mr_Nick666. If you want to try your hand at doing it yourself, you can find instructions to do so on the Wiibrew Wiki. To use the custom theme, place all the images into X:/system/theme on your SD card. Again, X refers to the drive letter of your SD card. For the icons, place them into each appropriate application folder within the homebrew directory on the SD card and rename them title.bmp.

    Conclusion

So, there you have it. No more pesky Twilight Hack. Custom channels. Unknown possibilities. We're amazed at how fast the Wii homebrew scene is progressing and we'll keep updating you when we discover a new milestone. If you would like to dig deeper, Wiibrew and GBATemp(thanks, Vypurr) are both great sources for in-depth information and links to more homebrew applications. Most of the research for this writeup was sourced directly from them.

We remind everyone to please be ethical in your homebrew decisions and keep supporting Nintendo and all the developers that are making the Wii such an interesting game console.

Target Terror: the worst Wii title yet?
    Posted 5/14/2008 at 3:40:47 PM

For those who are not familiar, Target: Terror is a Wii port of an arcade lightgun game from the 90's featuring digitized actors ala Lethal Enforcers. The problem is that the game originally released in arcades only 4 years ago.. well late enough to where it could have featured 3-d env..

    skate. coming to Wii, DS
    Posted 5/12/2008 at 3:00:12 PM

A version of EA's skate., probably the BEST skateboarding game ever released(in our humble opinion), is currently being developed for the Wii and DS. Sure, it's a little behind the other versions of the game, but for good reason.

Using dual analogs, the original control method just isn..
