Just a quick note to wish a happy Thanksgiving to all of our loyal readers in the US. We hope you have a wonderful day filled with food, football, and fun!
This being a short business week as well as the lead-up to massive sales on Friday, there's not a whole lot hitting shelves right now. In fact there are only a total of 6 games between the Wii and DS, and none of them are what we'd call a major title.
Hang tight until next week and we're sure the holiday tidal wave will return!
That's right! At long last, the original Mario Kart makes it to the Virtual Console. That's great news, right? Maybe, maybe not.
You probably loved Mario Kart back in the day. It was the only game of it's kind, and really put the SNES hardware to good use in faking 3d.
Now here's the bad(and some stuff you've forgotten): Every track is flat. That includes the barriers which are sometimes difficult to see. Only 2 players can race at a time, and even in single player, the game is only displayed on half of the screen(the other half displays the course map).
That's not to say this is a bad game. We just don't think a lot of you are looking for this when you can get the excellent Mario Kart 64 for only a few bucks more, or even Mario Kart Wii if you're looking to play online.
Oh,.. one thing we miss about this version of Kart: Coin collecting. Back in this one, collecting coins helped increase your top speed and could really help you overcome the difficult tracks later in the game. This added a bit more strategy compared to falling behind and grabbing a blue shell to obliterate the winner.
As has been tradition for the past few years, Nintendo will be releasing a few limited edition bundles of their handheld consoles on Friday this week. Typically these bundles include a carrying case, limited edition colors, and a game or two.
This year Nintendo has opted to go mostly with DLC. When you purchase each of these 2 bundles, you'll find it preloaded with several of Nintendo's downloadable DSiWare titles. Unfortunately, yes, there are clocks and calculators included, but there are also honest to goodness games up for grabs.
Fans will be able to grab an exclusive metallic blue color as well.. but standard white is available if that's more your taste. The color you choose will dictate which titles you receive, with the white bundle being geared towards those casual/older gamers that Nintendo loves to draw in. The blue bundle is filled with Mario themed software.
Metallic Blue Content:
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Dr. Mario Express
WarioWare: Snapped!:
Mario Calculator
Mario Clock
White Content:
Brain Age Express
Brain Age Express
Brain Age Express
Clubhouse Games Express
Photo Clock
No prices have been announced, so we'll assume these are hitting at the standard DSi price point of $170. If previous years are any indication, there will be no sign of these on shelves after Friday so get them while the gettin's good.
In anticipation of checking off friends and family on our Christmas lists, we've been watching sites such as Amazon like hawks, ready to swoop in for any deal that will make holiday gift-giving just a bit easier on our wallets.
