Want to cancel your ECA membership? Good luck!
Posted 12/3/2009 at 10:28:47 AM

Like many gamers, you may have signed up for a membership to the ECA over the past year. Maybe you did it for the now-defunct 10% off Amazon game purchases deal, or maybe you just wanted to support an organization that promised to support you as a gamer.

If you did, the ECA is paying you back this week not in savings or in advocacy, but in hassles and consumer bullying.

You see, the ECA has seen fit to remove a feature from their website that allowed members to cancel auto-renewals. Their excusereasoning? Members were canceling and renewing memberships frequently in order to take advantage of benefits. Seeing as each membership costs $19.99, we don't see how this would work out at all for those members.

This in itself is a little annoying as a business decision, but where things get hairy is in that the organization did nothing to warn members who already used it that their auto-renewals were not canceled. From here on out, the organization will only accept written cancellation requests at:

Attn: Accounting, ECA
64 Danbury Road, Suite 700
Wilton, CT 06897-4406

Further, they've used their forums to all but say that they will ignore letters that do not have a tracking number, so be sure to use certified mail when you cancel.

Finally, don't think you're safe from charges if your card has expired, as the ECA will update your expiration date on their own in order to continue charging you.

As a reminder, even promotional memberships culled from the "GIMAG" code have credit cards on file and will be charged $19.99 when your year expires. The ECA is supposed to email you a month in advance to remind you, but with the organization being this anti-consumer, who knows what tactics they will stoop to next.

Consumers, you have been warned.

PS3's high price could mean better games for Wii
Posted 3/16/2009 at 10:47:04 AM

It's no secret that the PS3 is damn expensive. Sony's decision to include a BluRay player gave it's hardware a slight advantage for cutting edge early adopters back in 2006 and 2007. At that time, the PS3 was among the cheapest BluRay players on the market: it was like getting a free game console.

Fast forward to late 2008, and things have changed. Standalone BluRay players are far cheaper than the PS3, and the directly competing Xbox-360 has undergone a price drop to only $200.. half the cost of Sony's monster machine. Now, publishers are taking a hard look at where they're profiting and realizing that the PS3's price is holding them back.

Their solution? Put more of their development budgets into the Wii, which currently holds the highest install base among all video game consoles of the current generation. Until now, the Wii has largely been ignored: a mistake for publishers as it has the lowest development costs and largest install base of all consoles today.

Now, big names like EA and Activision are starting to focus on the Wii. This could mean better games and more exclusives for the little guy. EA is already announcing Wii exclusives and taking a more serious approach to the console.

As a general fan of the gaming industry, part of me wants to say I hope Sony gets their act together, but for the Nintendo lover in me,.. I hope they keep doing what they're doing so we can get some games that change the stale reputation that the Wii's software library has given it over the past 2 years.

Nintendo's world domination plans unfolding smoothly: 100 million DS's shipped
Posted 3/12/2009 at 9:31:50 AM

As if the surprising success of the Wii wasn't enough to make Nintendo the #1 video game company today, they've just announced that they've shipped 100 millllllion DS's since the console's launch in 2004. Included in the figures are sales for the original Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, and Nintendo DSi.

If you have any doubt about Nintendo's dominance in the handheld market, keep in mind that just last month Sony announced worldwide PSP sales at 50 million units.

In addition, the DS has spawned over 80 titles with sales of over 1 million, 7 of those topping the 10 million mark.

Wii is the #2 console online. Friend Codes not as bad as you think
Posted 3/11/2009 at 2:08:11 PM

File this one under surprising. According to a recent survey done by the NPD consumer tracking group, the Wii is the second most popular gaming console played online at 29% of total consoles online. Last year, the Wii only managed 18% of consoles online.

The top console online, as you might expect, is the Xbox-360 at 50%. A specific percentage for the PS3 was not included in the NPD group's press release, but it was noted that it made 3rd place behind the Wii.

Being that the Wii's online system is so hindered by friend codes, we would have expected different results. Perhaps this is solely due to the staggering success of Smash Brothers, Guitar Hero and Mario Kart, but we can't be sure. The PS3's library also includes a few huge online titles such as Call of Duty 4/WaW and Burnout Paradise.

Hit the source link for the full press release.
