5 Reasons why the next Wii is not coming sooner than you think.
Posted 8/8/2008 at 8:36:12 AM

There's been a lot of talk amongst bloggers lately regarding an impending release of "Wii 2". Much of this talk stems from a quote made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last week. To paraphrase, he revealed that Nintendo was working on the next wave of hardware and that they started this process as soon as the Wii was finished. Many are taking this quote and adding a little speculation, coming to the conclusion that the Wii is being put out to pasture and a new console will be taking it's place very soon.

Here's 5 reasons why those people are wrong:

1. Nintendo is always working on something new.

The mere fact that Nintendo is working on something new is not an indication that whatever they have out currently is about to be cast aside: Iwata himself says that Nintendo is always looking for the next innovation in their hardware platforms. Nintendo's competitors largely survive by selling glorified PCs with proprietary firmware and software.. this is not quite the case with Nintendo. They tend to focus more on the end user experience. With the NES it was the Nintendo Seal of Quality. With the Super NES, it was innovative software coupled with advanced graphics processing(Mode 7, SuperFX). With the N64 it was a new approach to controllers, and the introduction to built in 4 player gaming. With the Gamecube - well... you can't win them all. Then of course we have the Wii which introduces not only very simple motion controls, but a user interface that is friendly as friendly can be. Whatever the next Nintendo console turns out to be,.. there's no doubt that it will have innovative new features that can't be thought up overnight.

2. The Wii is hot like a supernova.

This one is simple. Consoles don't go away when they're hot. At last month's E3 conference, Nintendo discussed a new trend they've realized.. month to month sales of game hardware can mimic holiday-type sales figures. For Nintendo, every month is November as they consistently vacate 400,000+ shelf spots where Wii boxes briefly sat. Until this trend starts to come to an end, there's no reason for Nintendo to even think about abandoning the Wii.

3. The Wii is still white.

One of Nintendo's favorite moves to freshen up their hardware without really doing anything is to release new color options for it. The DS is in this stage of it's lifespan right now, with many great looking color choices available to fit anyone's tastes. Nintendo started this trend with the original Gameboy in 1995 and has continued it on nearly everything they've released since then. These color releases are not just for fun.. they're designed to bring new visibility to consumers who maybe haven't taken notice before, or to entice past consumers with a model that looks "just a bit better" than the one they already have. Collectors are always happy for color changes too. This was proven beyond a doubt on black friday 2007 when Nintendo released a limited edition gold colored DS packaged with Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass. These packages flew off shelves for the most part in one day, and haven't been seen on retail shelves since.

4. The Wii still includes Wii Sports.

When Nintendo released the Wii back in 2006, they brought us back to a better time. A time we never thought we'd see again. The time when a console included your first game for free. In fact, even after hearing of Nintendo's plans to include Wii sports in the box, we initially dismissed it as a mere tech demo. Turns out we couldn't have been more wrong, as Wii Sports has gone on to be one of the most popular and enjoyable experiences on the Wii. It's simple and inviting gameplay style levels the field between casual and hardcore gamers, providing everyone an experience that they can enjoy without a big learning curve or immense handicaps.

That being said, there will come a time before the Wii expires that Wii Sports doesn't draw as many customers as it does today. When that day comes, Nintendo will throw in a different or additional game, and the Wii will continue on merrily at the same price. This is par for the course in the console world.. the NES switched from including Gyromite to Super Mario Bros. to SMB/Duck Hunt, and finally to SMB/DH/World Class Track Meet. The Super NES started shipping with Super Mario All-Stars, and even the X-box, X-box 360, and PS3 added games to their bundles when they needed a sales boost.

5. The Wii's price has not dropped

When even offering updated looks and newer games doesn't help sales of a console, the inevitable next step is a price drop. At $249, the Wii is currently the cheapest current generation console available. This price point should insulate it from drops for a bit while the $279 and up Xbox 360 and $399 and up PS3 battle it out for the 2nd and 3rd spots in this console generation. Rumor has it that the Xbox 360 Arcade console may reach a $229-$249 price point very soon, but it's yet to be seen if consumers will begin choosing Microsoft's console based on price alone. We're inclined to say they won't, being that Wii's are still selling on the grey market for $300-$349.. well above the current price of the Xbox 360 Arcade console.

Conclusion

Considering the five facts above, there is no reason for us to suspect Nintendo will release a new platform anytime soon. As many have put it, Nintendo may as well be in the business of printing money.. all this video game stuff is just a middleman to that.

That being said, we have no doubt that Nintendo will have something up their sleeves and ready to go for when sales do begin to drop off. With the Wii's third holiday season quickly approaching and supplies still slim, the only question left is when will that drop in sales possibly come?

Mario coming to WiiWare? Reggie hints YES.
Posted 7/22/2008 at 1:56:15 PM

During a recent interview with GameTrailers Geoff Keighly, NOA President Reggie Fils-Amie was asked several pressing questions. Where are Nintendo's core games? When will we see the next Mario and Zelda games? Will there be a Mario WiiWare title coming this year?

That last inquiry is interesting. Was anyone expecting a Mario WiiWare game? We don't think so.. but Reggie's answer? "you're trying to date me".

That sure sounds like confirmation of existence to us. No clue what it could be or when it's coming,.. but don't be surprised to see it at some point down the line.

We're hoping against hope that it's a 2d game in the New Super Mario Bros. style. We're waiting anxiously..

Check out the video below for the full interview..
